I worked three different places early in my career focusing mostly on print design while learning to code from books and friends. I built ecommerce websites for a small CCTV company and handled all their print needs.

From there I moved on to Row Logic. They took me in knowing I only knew a little PHP and HTML/CSS. They taught me so much. I brought an eye for design and a strong work ethic, and they provided an opportunity to learn.

After Row Logic I went on to work at Church of the King where I had to stand on my own and figure out how to solve problems without the support of more senior developers. It was an intense trial-by-fire learning experience. After leaving full-time work at COTK, I continued to consult for them for several years and trained my full-time replacement.

Clear Sky Designs enabled me to take my curiosity for code and learning to the next level. For most of my time there I was the only developer and handled the majority of design. I inherited a variety of legacy codebases and quickly learned how to work directly with clients to translate their needs into technical solutions.

Eventually our dev team grew to three engineers before the company closed. I spent 8 years of my life working with Kyle Roseborrough. He was an incredible friend and mentor to me during that time in a way that no other employer has been before or since.

While at Clear Sky Designs I created GoCart, an open-source eCommerce platform built on CodeIgniter (no longer actively maintained). Two other engineers were brought on to help with the project, and it contributed to the bulk of our work for several years. It was downloaded thousands of times and used by businesses all over the world.

I formed Jericho Studios with Scotty Chabert, whom I met while working at Church of the King. We started the company as a side gig, but it quickly grew as we took on clients from both Clear Sky Designs and Row Logic. We mostly built custom marketing sites and web applications on a bespoke PHP framework and content management system.

I left full-time work at Jericho Studios when I took my job at Deltree. I continued to consult for them for some time after.

Ben Reece hired me to join the team at Deltree to build a new eLearning platform for MD Anderson Cancer Center. This was my most challenging project to date, covering significant ground from WCAG and COPPA compliance to server configuration and migration of disparate data structures. Deltree hired a large team of designers, writers, animators, and voice actors to create a gamified platform that teaches kids about the dangers of tobacco use. Upon completion, I handed off documentation to their internal team for ongoing development and maintenance.

I was one of the first engineers hired at Crossword Hobbyist, which offered online platforms for creating crosswords and word searches. I modernized the codebase by introducing object-oriented programming and organizing it into an MVC architecture. I also introduced Digital Ocean for hosting.

Eventually we expanded our offerings to include a worksheet generator with a variety of formats for teachers to use in their classrooms, built on a new platform using Laravel and VueJS. Before leaving, I helped grow our team by recruiting an engineer to help improve our CI/CD pipeline, back-end APIs, and hosting infrastructure.

Ministry Brands was a throwback for me from my days at Church of the King. Back then, there was a church management platform called Fellowship One, and Church of the King was an early adopter. When I came to work for Ministry Brands, I was assigned to the Church CRM team, which turned out to be Fellowship One.

This was my first time working for a large company with substantial traffic and a large engineering team. I learned a great deal about working in a corporate environment on a well-established product, and it was a valuable experience collaborating with a bigger team of engineers.

Klaviyo recruited me near the end of the COVID lockdowns and I've spent most of my time on the marketing engineering team. The breadth of work I've gotten to do here has been remarkable, spanning multiple teams, technologies, and disciplines. I've grown more in this role than any other in my career, and it continues to challenge me in the best ways. If you're looking for a great place to work, check them out.
